Field Notes.
Thanks for visiting my website! I’m Jennifer Dodsworth, a researcher and hill farmer passionate about supporting upland farming cultures and the agricultural landscapes of Northern England. Originally from the North York Moors, I now live and farm in the North Pennines, Cumbria, where my work bridges academic research, policy, and the lived realities of hill farming.

I’m a tenant hill farmer and a farmer’s daughter, deeply rooted in the landscapes and livelihoods of upland communities. Alongside farming, I work as a Research Fellow at the University of Oxford, where my research focuses on agri-environment policy, sustainable farming, and rural governance. My work includes collaborating with Defra on the Sustainable Farming Incentive (SFI) Pilot and Environmental Land Management (ELM) schemes, as well as supporting research on the Agile Initiative’s innovative policy engagement model. I also explore how digital tools shape public and farming perspectives on landscape and aesthetics.

Because I live and breathe this way of life, I know first-hand the challenges facing hill farmers and rural communities. I also understand the research world, how to bridge the gap between policy ambitions and the realities on the ground. I aim to make rural-focused projects more relevant, effective, and connected to the people they aim to support.
